Pre-Service Primary Teachers' Beliefs of Teaching Science With Simulations

2016

Although the benefits of the use of simulations in science education have been extensively documented, research on pre-service teacher education related to the use of simulations in science teaching remains limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the beliefs of pre-service primary teachers in two teacher training programs of two different universities (n = 36 and n = 18) related to teaching science with simulations. The teachers participated in an intervention where they planned and gave a science lesson where simulations were used. The effect of the two different types of interventions on the beliefs was also studied. The Interconnected Model of Professional Growth by Clarke and …

‘Teachers see nothing’ : exploring students’ and teachers’ perspectives on school bullying with a new arts-based methodology

2020

Even though bullying is a perennial problem, there are still significant gaps in the research. The sensitive nature of the issue prompted us to develop and test a new arts-based method – a set of incomplete, problem-focused comic strips that were given to the participants for creative completion and were subsequently used as individualised interview prompts. The study took place in Russia with 14 teachers and 39 school children. The findings indicated that students and teachers agreed that instances of bullying should not be reported. However, there is a significant difference in how bullying is perceived by teachers and students. The majority of teachers indicated either seeing no bullying…

Italian Primary School prospective teachers beliefs about knowledge construction: a case study about models

2012

In this paper we discuss a study on the approaches to modeling of students of the 4-year Primary School Teacher program at the University of Palermo, Italy. The answers to a specially designed questionnaire are analyzed on the basis of an a-priori analysis made using a general scheme of reference on the epistemology of mathematics and physics. The study is performed by using quantitative data analysis methods, i.e. analysis of implicative and similarity trees. Dans ce papier, nous menons une étude relative à l’approche de la notion de modélisation par des étudiants de 4ème année de formation à la fonction de professeur d’école primaire à l’Université de Palerme, Italie. Les réponses à un qu…

Teaching a skill or using a tool? : Studying Finnish EFL teachers’ beliefs about the teaching of reading and writing

2016

How teachers construct their beliefs about foreign language (FL) teaching in shifting educational contexts is an important, yet little known area. This study addresses this issue through a discourse analysis of research interviews conducted with 16 Finnish English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers about their views of teaching reading and writing. It identifies four different subject positions: ‘unaccountable’, ‘old-time’, ‘modern’ and ‘authentic’. The study shows that the participating teachers’ beliefs are contradictory and that although the teachers are aware of more recent discourses of language teaching, they find it difficult to link these with their teaching practice. peerReviewed
